HON. MARK D. THOMPSON (RET.)

  • Mark is a Colorado native and served as district court judge in Colorado's 5th Judicial District  for 12 years from 2010 until 2023.   In 2013 he was selected as Chief Judge of the 5th Judicial District.  As district court judge, Mark presided in all subject areas of the court - civil, domestic relations, criminal, and other matters - and he conducted hundreds of trials and evidentiary hearings and authored opinions encompassing a broad spectrum of issues.   His work also included review of governmental actions such as zoning determinations and annexation proceedings, as well as appellate review of county court decisions.    As Chief Judge, he presided over the 5th Judicial District's district-wide grand jury and served on a variety of state-wide committees. 


  • Mark began his legal career with a law firm in Denver focused on civil and domestic relations litigation and appeals.   He relocated to Breckenridge in 1994 where he joined French, West & Brown. P.C.  During his 18 years of private practice before taking the bench, Mark focused on litigation and transactional work involving real property,  land use and development, construction, and other commercial matters.   He also served in a member of the Summit Countywide Planning Commission, the Town of Frisco Planning Commission, and as a board member of the Summit County Housing Authority.

  • Author, Colorado Construction Law Handbook, Ch. 27 Delay Claims (1st, 2nd, and 3rd Ed.)
  • Presented on variety of topics including use of parental evaluations in domestic relations cases, virtual courtroom technology, and employment litigation
  • Testified before Colorado General Assembly
  • Married with 3 adult children
  • 4 Years N.C.A.A. Div. I Alpine Ski Racing
  • Avid skier for more than 50 years
  • Other interests include cycling, banjo, fishing, hunting, alpine climbing, reading and cooking
